Black History Month

On 18 October 2023, a vibrant Black History Month event was held indoors due to bad weather, featuring activities like African mask making, storytelling, hair braiding, and dancing to a steel band, with Barnet's first Black councillor, Agnes Slocombe, sharing stories about the Windrush Generation.

On Wednesday, 18 October 2023 we hosted the wonderfully, vibrant Black History Month event.  It was a family friendly event with for local residents who flocked to  make African masks,  listen to Black history storytelling, have their hair braided, enjoy eating jerk chicken, rice and peas, and dance to the steel band.  We heard Barnet's first Black councillor and mayor, Agnes Slocombe telling wonderful real life stories of the Windrush Generation and her life and times.  Her talked was illustrated with poster sized black and white photos, kindly loaned by BACA.

The whole evening thrummed with good cheer and a sense that people were truly enjoying themselves, despite the atrocious wind and rain that destroyed our two gazebos and led to the whole event being held indoors.

The volunteers and helpers brilliantly set up, took down, and generally oiled the wheels of the event.
